LMNH Climate Response in Action

Thankfully the cooler weather has returned, but last week was most definitely a scorcher. From Monday through Wednesday last week, Environment Canada issued a Heat Warning Level 1. Certain vulnerable persons may be affected when a Heat Alert (Level 1) is issued.

The Little Mountain Neighbourhood House team sprang into action and set up a heat response table on August 16th at the corner of Main St and the 21st Avenue Plaza. The team handed out drinking water to passersby, dampened facecloths, cool kits, and heat-related information. We misted people with a spray bottle who wanted to cool down, taught people how to build their own cool kits and reminded everyone to stay hydrated and to check in on their neighbours and friends who might have difficulties during the hot weather. We had a lot of people who stopped and chatted and expressed their gratitude for our help.

A shout-out goes out to Coco et Olive for kindly letting us use the bathroom (staying hydrated has its consequences…).

While the Heat Warning is now over, we don’t know what the rest of the month holds in store. What we do know is that it is always best to be prepared.
